Yogic Meditation for Beginners

Article by Sumedha Rewar

When you think about doing yoga, the primary step will be to practice yogic postures and balanced breathing. After reaching a certain level of success, yoga can be clubbed up with meditation. It will help you in focusing your mind and spirit for a well-rounded experience. Meditation in yoga involves much more than the regular meditation procedures.

Yoga meditation is meant for quieting your busy mind and keeping away from unwanted thoughts and worries while performing some breathing exercises or postures. The more you try to compose your thoughts with meditation; there will be better effects on the body and mind.

Beginning of Yoga Meditation

The primary step towards a successful meditation is to practice it regularly. The yoga teacher sets the time for meditation. The beginning phase could be a bit difficult. Whether you are a beginner to yoga or taking classes for a while, don’t pressurize yourself to do meditation for a particular time.

There are serious yogis spending their lifetime to learn meditation and your five minutes in the beginning phase are just enough to begin the process. It is always good to do whatever your mind says and carry on with the process on a continuous basis.

The primary way to learn meditation is to start focusing on a particular spot with a quiet state of mind. Try to free your mind from the thoughts about the past or the future. Begin with active meditation and keep your thoughts on something specific.

The idea about gazing at a particular spot or candle flame is only to streamline your attention. Be prepared for mind wandering. In the beginning, your mind will wander sometimes. As soon as you realize that sudden drift in your thoughts, redirect your mental focus back to the present. Yoga meditation should be tried as there are many people who’ve attained wonderful results from it.

Meditation Process

Set your time: Choose a time of the day when you can meditate without any interruption. Do it before or after your physical yoga practice. You can combine breathing exercises with meditation, but physical yoga has to be done separately for your exercising session.

Posture: You must follow the right posture for a comfortable experience in meditation. In cross-legged posture, switch the top leg each time during meditation.

Gaze at an object: You can choose different objects as per your choice for gazing during meditation. It could be a black dot, candle flame or anything else you like to use. Close your eyes and feel the rhythm of your yoga breathing with the flow of thoughts in your brain.

Increase your meditation time: As you become regular in meditation practice, increase the schedule by 1-2 minutes every time to remain consistent. The flow will improve every time you meditate in an appropriate way. Meditation doesn’t aim at the achievement of the empty mind. It is actually about resisting the temptation to react to the ideas and thoughts arising in your mind about the past or future.

Don’t miss out the real purpose of meditation and get the most out of your efforts to stay fit in a spiritual way.
